A great way to start the weekend each Saturday morning from mid-May to mid-Oct, 9:00 – 1:00. Lots of fresh produce, flowers, crafts, great  entertainment, horse-drawn wagon ride, people watching. It’s a good place to meet and chat with some Vermont locals, plus sample some good food.

This is what gold looks like. It’s a gluten free beer, made at the Alchemist Pub & Brewery in Waterbury, and it just won the top prize in that category at the World Beer Cup.

“Not bad for no barley,” said owner John Kimmich as he took a drink.

Kimmich came up with the brew for his wife. She loves beer, but became allergic to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. This beer instead uses sorghum, a type of grass.

“It is a pretty easy drinking medium bodied crisp ale,” said Jennifer Kimmich, “it definitely has some spiciness to it from the sorghum and the yeast that John uses, but it’s real drinkable, it’s delicious.”

Judges agree, choosing it out of the 3,400 brewers that enter the world cup challenge, from more then 44 countries. And with all that competition, Vermont rose to the top, two other brewers won medals at the World Beer Cup.

TIPS FOR ENJOYING THE SNOWSHOE FESTIVAL

Think Snow – Dress in warm layers. Wear wool or synthetics under windproof clothing, hat and mittens. Bring plenty of food and water. In case of no snow, trips will run as hikes.

**Note: Area colleges, retailers and other local businesses provide free use of demo snowshoes throughout the day. Registration is the day of the event only. Sign-ups for trips and the use of snowshoes are on a first-come first-served basis.
