Farmers markets are one of the most popular experiences in Vermont. Every week during the spring, summer, and fall, communities across the state bring together local farmers and entrepreneurs to make the freshest foods and most innovative crafts available directly to the public. In the Waterbury area there are two farmers markets that are definitely worth checking out:

Waterbury Farmer’s Market
Thursdays, May 20 – September, 2010, 3:00 – 7:00
Rusty Parker Park, Main Street
In front of the train station

Produce; organic meats (chicken, lamb, beef pork and rabbit); eggs; cheese; baked goods; Vermont wine; Vermont peanut putter; Eastern European prepared food; relish and marinades; bedding plants; flower bouquets; herbal products; handmade cards, jewelry and pottery; chair massages.

Waitsfield Farmers’ Market, Saturdays, May – Oct 23, 2010

www.waitsfieldfarmersmarket.com

A great way to start the weekend each Saturday morning from mid-May to mid-Oct, 9:00 – 1:00. Lots of fresh produce, flowers, crafts, great entertainment, horse-drawn wagon ride, people watching. It’s a good place to meet and chat with some Vermont locals, plus sample some good food.

Alchemist Pub & Brewery Wins Gold at the World Beer Cup

Vermonters have always taken pride in their beer. There are currently 21 micro breweries throughout the state, the most per capita anywhere in the country. But its not just the quantity that makes Vermont beer so special, its the high quality standards that the brewers hold themselves to. Proving that this year was John Kimmich from the Alchemist Pub & Brewery. John took home the Gold Medal in the Gluten Free category for his brew “Celia Saison”.

From WCAX:

This is what gold looks like. It’s a gluten free beer, made at the Alchemist Pub & Brewery in Waterbury, and it just won the top prize in that category at the World Beer Cup.

“Not bad for no barley,” said owner John Kimmich as he took a drink.

Kimmich came up with the brew for his wife. She loves beer, but became allergic to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. This beer instead uses sorghum, a type of grass.

“It is a pretty easy drinking medium bodied crisp ale,” said Jennifer Kimmich, “it definitely has some spiciness to it from the sorghum and the yeast that John uses, but it’s real drinkable, it’s delicious.”

Judges agree, choosing it out of the 3,400 brewers that enter the world cup challenge, from more then 44 countries. And with all that competition, Vermont rose to the top, two other brewers won medals at the World Beer Cup.

The Alchemist brews their own beer in small batches in the basement, selling 9 on tap only at the Waterbury pub, for a total of about 475 barrels a year. To learn more about The Alchemist Pub & Brewery visit their website: http://www.alchemistbeer.com/. For information about lodging and other attractions near The Alchemist visit the Waterbury Tourism website: http://www.waterbury.org/index.php.

Opened in 1998 by Willie Docto an Greg Trulson, the Moose Meadow Lodge has been one of the premiere B&B's in Vermont for over a decade. A Vermont log cabin like no other, the Moose Meadow Lodge is close to Vermont's most popular attractions, including Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream factory, and the ski resorts of Stowe, Sugarbush, Bolton, and Mad River Glen. The friendly village of Waterbury, where you'll find everything you need, is only three miles away. In 2006, the Vermont Lodging and Restaurant Association recognized Willie and Greg for the incredible experience they provide guests with the "B&B Innkeepers of the Year Award".

Opened in 1998 by Willie Docto and Greg Trulson, the Moose Meadow Lodge has been one of the premiere B&B’s in Vermont for over a decade. A Vermont log cabin like no other, the Moose Meadow Lodge is close to Vermont’s most popular attractions, including Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream factory, and the ski resorts of Stowe, Sugarbush, Bolton, and Mad River Glen. The friendly village of Waterbury, where you’ll find everything you need, is only three miles away. In 2006, the Vermont Lodging and Restaurant Association recognized Willie and Greg for the incredible experience they provide guests with the “B&B Innkeepers of the Year Award”.

In addition to running the Moose Meadow Lodge, Willie owns the only association management company in Vermont and produces festivals, concerts and events. He is also a free-lance classical violinist, performing in orchestras in Vermont and Washington, DC. Greg is a former computer systems architect and trainer. He is an accomplished woodworker who created many of the furnishings and rustic decorations in the Lodge. His twig furniture and other works are made with wood from the property. His creations have been commissioned by people from as far as Maryland and Puerto Rico.

The lodge, a renovated family home on 86 acres boasts luxury guest rooms, a hot tub, hiking trails, trout pond, and the Sky Loft – a glass-enclosed gazebo at the highest point of the property with panoramic views. Whether you love skiing, hiking, snowmobiling, biking, hunting, fishing, antiquing, fine dining, the arts, or simply getting some rest, the Moose Meadow Lodge is a perfect location to do everything or nothing at all.
